Katherine Michael Best of Show Award at 2008 Wesley Chapels Art in the Park...Purchase Award recipient at the 2008 Cortez Commercial Fishing & Art Festival...Merit Award Recipient at the 2007 and 2008 Temple Terrace Arts Festival and Winner of the Best Painting Award at the 2007 St. Augustine Fall Arts Festival
Artist Statement My goal as an artist is to create simple, joyful paintings. I make paintings that I want to be surrounded by and that make me happy. People intrigue me and I think capturing their emotions is important. Painting is a gift I give to myself every day. Surprised, joyful and contemplative faces always seem to find their way into my paintings. I like to use bright, almost obnoxious colors and textures. They lend intensity to my work. When I begin a painting, I spend about ten minutes throwing a sketch onto a canvas. I spend the next couple of weeks trying to correct all the mistakes I made from those ten minutes. Sometimes I become friends with the mistakes and I leave them in intentionally. They give character and soul to my subjects and that is always my goal. Each piece I create is a fantastic journey for me...I never know what will happen or what the end result will be. I just trust that the painting will evolve as I am playing and...eventually it does!
Artist Bio Katherine is a self taught artist and started painting shortly after moving to Florida in 1999. Inspired by the vibrant colors of nature, she works diligently to create a storybook with her paintings. I paint whatever I want to paint and how I want to paint it. I am always grateful when people respond positively to my work. They seem to understand the emotion I try to create. Communicating through visual art is something I want to do for the rest of my life.
Currently, Katherine participates in several juried art shows. She was awarded Best of Show at the 2008 Wesley Chapels Art in the Park for her painting titled Woods Behind Hollys House. She also won the Best Painting award at the 2007 St. Augustine Fall Arts Festival in November for her painting titled Beach Breakfast. Katherines painting titled Tink Fulford with Grandson Mark, Cortez, Florida won a purchase award from the Florida Institute of Saltwater Heritage and can be viewed at the Florida Maritime Museum in Cortez, Florida. She was once again chosen as a featured artist for the 2007 Temple Terrace Orange Art Project.
A lover of travel, Katherine has spent time in Provence, France and in 2006 went on a painting holiday in Umbria, Italy. Her group focused on plein air painting under the direction of John Booth (former art director at Eton College, Windsor, England). Katherine and her husband Brett are enjoying life in their New Tampa home with their daughters, Andi and Charlotte and dogs, Cleo & Tucker.
